How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Match the unit type to packaging: bench-top homogenizers go in foam-lined cartons on a pallet, while skid-mounted or pump-driven units require full crating and blocking.
- Purge product lines, drain lubricants if specified by the OEM, and cap all sanitary ports; remove fragile gauges and mount them separately with padding.
- Center the unit on a 4-way pallet, then bolt or band to skids; add tilt/shock indicators and mark lift points to protect the high-pressure pump assembly.
- If a carrier requests density, provide exact weight and dimensions including the crate; attach a packing list with serial numbers and photos for claims support.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Clear NMFC alignment for homogenizers reduces reclass risk and speeds up quoting across LTL carriers.
- Purpose-built crating and bracing minimize vibration damage to pumps and seals, lowering claim exposure and avoidable reship costs.
- Non-hazardous status helps bypass hazmat fees and paperwork, keeping transit simple for lab and plant deliveries.
- Accurate specs (type, mounting, accessories) steer you to the right equipment services—liftgate, inside delivery—preventing costly redeliveries.
