How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Reference NMFC 123080, Class 85 on the BOL and note if the housings move loose or in packages; include piece count and basic dims/weight for smooth carrier pricing.
- If shipping loose, band housings to skids or into wood cradles, cap sharp flanges and open ends, and add VCI wrap to curb surface rust during multi-stop LTL.
- For packaged units, separate nested shells with fiberboard or foam to prevent metal-on-metal scuffs, add corner protectors, and block/brace to stop round housings from rolling.
- Label handling needs: arrows for orientation, ‘Do Not Stack’ for thin-gauge shells, and indicate lift points to avoid dents from forks or slings.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable costs: a fixed Class 85 removes density-driven reclass risks and stabilizes LTL quotes for varying shell sizes.
- Packaging flexibility: approved as loose or packaged, letting maintenance teams and OEMs ship on tight timelines without over-prepping.
- Fewer damage claims: guidance focused on flanges, edges, and round-body restraint reduces dents and rework, lowering total landed cost.
- Simple compliance: non-hazardous commodity broadens carrier choices, streamlines paperwork, and supports faster tender-to-pickup cycles.
