How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 123100 and Class 85 on the BOL; choose boxes for lighter KD sets and wood crates for heavier iron housings to meet carrier handling limits.
- Cushion cast-iron edges with dense foam or corrugated pads, add VCI wrap and desiccant to prevent rust during transit, then block and brace inside the container.
- Bundle loose hardware and grates in labeled poly bags, secure to the main housing with tape or banding so parts don't shift; mark orientation and center of gravity.
- For palletized crates, allow 4-way forklift entry and band the crate to the pallet; example: two KD housings per 48x40 pallet with spacers to avoid metal-to-metal contact.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 85 removes density calculations, speeding quotes and reducing reclass risk.
- KD packaging lowers cube and improves stackability, often cutting LTL cost per unit.
- Box/crate options align with common carrier rules, minimizing OS&D claims and accessorials.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier choices and keeps lead times predictable.
