How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Verify eligibility: iron or steel units, no fins, and shell-or pipe-type construction. Exclude aluminum or finned models to avoid misclassification.
- Remove detachable fittings and pack them separately in sturdy boxes, crates, or drums. Label as detached fittings for NMFC 123290 and secure with internal dunnage.
- Mount the exchanger on a skid, block and band it tight, cap all nozzles, and fully drain any residual brine or water. Add tilt and shock indicators for delicate tube bundles.
- Print NMFC 123290, Class 77.5 on the BOL, include piece count and exact dimensions/weight, and request needed accessorials (liftgate, appointment) for heavy machinery.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable Class 77.5 rating streamlines quoting and rate negotiations, reducing time spent on density calculations.
- Compliant boxing/crating of detached fittings minimizes reclass/reweigh fees and lowers claim exposure for tube sheet or nozzle damage.
- Non-hazardous status shortens tendering and documentation cycles, helping shipments move faster through LTL terminals.
- Clear scope—iron/steel, no fins—prevents costly misrates versus finned coils or non-qualifying materials, keeping freight budgets accurate.
