Notes

Note 123576: NOTE-Applies on machines designed to reclaim, recycle or recover refrigerant gas or liquid.

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Calculate density before you book. Convert package volume to cubic feet (L×W×H in inches ÷ 1728) and divide weight by that number; e.g., 95 lb in 3.0 cu ft = 31.7 pcf.
  2. Package in sturdy boxes or fully enclosed crates that meet NMFC Item 170. Block and brace internals, add skid runners for forklifts, and use Tip-N-Tell for tilt-sensitive units.
  3. Prepare the machine: ship the unit empty, cap ports, secure hoses, and place absorbent pads for any residual oil. Do not include any refrigerant cylinders in the same package.
  4. Label the BOL with NMFC 123575, weight and cube, and reference notes items 123576/123577 if applicable. Photograph packaging to support claims and avoid reclass disputes.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Optimized density can drop the class and lower LTL rates—tighter crating that reduces cube often pays back in immediate freight savings.
  • Packaging to Item 170 reduces carrier exceptions, cutting reweigh/reclass fees and accelerating transit through machinery-handling terminals.
  • Non-hazardous status streamlines tendering and avoids hazmat surcharges, improving carrier options and pickup flexibility for HVAC service projects.
  • Clear documentation (NMFC 123575 on the BOL, verified dimensions) prevents billing corrections and shortens cash cycles with fewer invoice disputes.
