Notes
Note 123551: NOTE-Applies on self-contained ice making machines with or without storage bins or dispensers.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Calculate density per Item 170: weigh the fully packed unit (including pallet/crate), measure outer dimensions, compute PCF, then select the correct class within 92.5–250.
- Package to NMFC Package 107 or 1082: use sturdy boxes or a wood crate, block and brace the compressor and evaporator, and strap the machine upright to prevent coil damage.
- Prepare the machine before pickup: drain water lines and bins, cap inlets/outlets, secure doors and panels, and add tilt/shock indicators for sensitive refrigeration components.
- Document specifics on the BOL: note NMFC 123550, packaging type (box/crate), gross weight, and calculated density so carriers can audit without reclassing.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Hit lower costs by increasing density: tight crating and minimal voids can move your shipment into a lower class within the 92.5–250 range.
- Avoid reclass and inspection fees through compliant packaging (Pkg 107/1082) and clear Item 170 density data on the BOL.
- Reduce damage claims by immobilizing heavy components and shipping upright—critical for compressors, condensers, and control boards in ice machines.
- Faster quotes and pickups: carriers recognize NMFC 123550 for ice-making machinery, speeding rate confirmation and minimizing exceptions.
