How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Verify the part is iron or steel crusher jaws (not a full crusher) and list NMFC 123790, Class 55 on the BOL.
- Palletize or crate each jaw set; use steel banding, edge guards, and blocking to prevent shifting and tip-over during LTL handling.
- Apply rust inhibitor and VCI or heavy poly wrap; cap bolt holes and cover teeth to protect handlers and adjacent cargo.
- Plan for lift equipment: keep the center of gravity low, provide four-way fork access, and request heavy-capacity forklifts for pieces over 1,500 lb.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing: fixed Class 55 eliminates density disputes and reduces costly reclassifications.
- Lower claim risk: rugged crating and edge protection minimize damage to jaws and surrounding freight.
- Operational speed: forklift-friendly packaging and clear labeling shorten dock time and cut accessorials.
- Simpler compliance: non-hazardous metal parts expand carrier options and streamline paperwork.
