How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Specify NMFC 123800, Class 85 on the BOL and list packaging as “boxes” or “crates” so carriers don’t apply density rules or reclass the freight.
- Immobilize moving pieces inside each carton: cap bearing cups, tie the yokes, and add foam or corrugated dividers; for export or long hauls, add VCI wrap and desiccant.
- For heavy bundles or mixed sizes, choose a wood crate and bolt or block the joints to skids; for small retail packs, use double‑wall cartons in a banded 48x40 pallet.
- Mark heavy boxes over 70 lb, keep the center of gravity low, and use corner boards plus two steel or poly straps to prevent pallet shift during cross‑docking.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 85 simplifies quoting and forecasting; fewer inspections and reclass charges mean steadier LTL spend for driveline suppliers and rebuild shops.
- Boxed/crated requirement lowers OS&D risk, cutting damage write‑offs and keeping production or service bays moving when replacement joints are time‑critical.
- Non‑hazmat status broadens carrier options and avoids hazmat surcharges, speeding tender and reducing total landed cost.
- Clear NMFC mapping streamlines multi‑stop distribution—easier to consolidate with axles, hubs, or gearsets without density calculations.
