How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Print the BOL with the full item: “NMFC 123917 — Kits, universal joint repair (cross and bearing kits), in boxes — Class 70” to prevent reclass.
- Pack each kit in rigid cartons with trays or dividers so bearing caps, crosses, and clips can’t rub; e.g., foam or molded pulp inserts inside the box.
- Palletize boxed kits in master cartons, no overhang; band and wrap tightly. Class isn’t density-based, but include dimensions for quoting and dock handling.
- Avoid mixing with oily or loose metal parts that could pierce cartons. Add part numbers on outer labels to streamline receiving at driveline rebuilders.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable costs: fixed Class 70 rating reduces reclass fees and supports accurate LTL quotes across lanes.
- Broader carrier access: non-hazardous auto parts move without hazmat surcharges or special endorsements.
- Damage control: box-only packaging aligns with the NMFC item, lowering OS&D risk and claim exposure.
- Operational efficiency: consistent classification lets TMS rules auto-assign class and speeds rate shopping for aftermarket distributors.
