How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Coil each endless knife loosely with edge guards, wrap in VCI or oiled paper to deter corrosion, then place in a fitted inner box before the main box or crate.
- Block and brace inside crates so the loops cannot shift; add rigid separators if shipping multiple coils to prevent blade-to-blade contact.
- Note “Endless belt/band knives, boxed or crated – NMFC 123920, Class 85” on the BOL for quick rating and to avoid reclass charges.
- Avoid mixing loose hardware in the same package; use a “Do Not Stack” or top-load only label if the crate lid is not load-bearing.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable costs with a fixed Class 85 rating, no density calculation needed for these boxed or crated loop blades.
- Lower claim risk when using edge protection and internal bracing, reducing downtime for sawmills, foam cutters, and food processors.
- Faster quotes and approvals since the commodity is clearly defined as non-hazardous tooling within the Machinery Group.
- Cleaner invoicing and fewer reclass fees by matching packaging to the item description (boxes or crates) and stating the NMFC on documents.
