How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Calculate density correctly: measure exterior box dimensions, convert to cubic feet, then divide weight by cube to report pcf for Item 170.
- Protect edges and tips: cap or sheath blades, add heavy corrugate and foam, or strap bundles to a solid board to prevent punctures.
- Label clearly on the BOL: "Machine knives/blades, NOI, boxed" with weight and density; include count of boxes or boards.
- Keep shipments stackable: choose rigid cartons, block voids, and apply corner protection to avoid carrier non-stackable fees.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Density-driven rating lets compact, tightly packed blades price at lower classes, cutting LTL spend without sacrificing protection.
- Standard boxes or boards reduce reclass risk and dispute time, improving invoice accuracy and shortening cash cycles.
- Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat paperwork and fees, speeding tendering and broadening carrier options.
- Damage prevention packaging lowers claims on sharp tooling, protecting production schedules and spare-part availability.
