How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List on the BOL as “Foundry ladles, iron or steel, without trucks — NMFC 123960, Class 70” and include piece count, skid count, and any oversize notes.
- Stabilize the ladle on a stout skid or steel pallet; block under trunnions and belly, then band with 5/8 in. steel strapping and add cross-bracing to stop roll or tip.
- Confirm the ladle is fully cooled, emptied, and cleaned of slag; cap the pour lip and protect edges with lumber or rubber guards to prevent impact damage.
- Choose equipment by height and footprint: low-profile units can move LTL in dry van; tall or wide ladles may require flatbed with chains, straps, and tarp protection.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 70 simplifies quoting and reduces reclass fees, giving predictable LTL costs for maintenance turnarounds and rebuild projects.
- Clear non-hazardous status speeds carrier acceptance and avoids hazmat surcharges, keeping total landed cost down.
- Standardized description (without trucks) minimizes disputes over accessorials and handling, improving on-time pickups and deliveries.
- Proper blocking and bracing practices cut claim risk on high-mass items, protecting capital assets and preventing costly downtime.
