How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Pack cylinders in sturdy boxes or wood crates with rim blocking and cross-bracing to prevent ovalization; add edge guards and foam to stop scuffing.
- Choose packaging by size: double-wall boxed protection for small residential drums; skidded, lag-screwed crates with internal braces for larger commercial units.
- Mark orientation, center of gravity, and “Do Not Clamp/Do Not Drop” to keep forklifts from distorting the cylinder shell or bearing seats.
- On the BOL, state: “Cylinders, washing machine, NMFC 124050, Class 150, boxed/crated, non-hazardous,” and confirm the part is for non-steam models to match the listing.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 150 means faster quoting and predictable LTL budgeting without density calculations.
- Lower reclass and inspection risk when shipped boxed or crated per NMFC guidance, reducing surprise fees.
- Non-hazardous appliance components open access to more carriers and service levels, improving transit options.
- Proper bracing and moisture protection reduce out-of-round damage and returns, protecting margins and customer satisfaction.
