How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Calculate density from actual weight and cube to determine the class within 50–400 per Item 170; keep crates tight to avoid extra cube.
  2. Use sturdy boxes or wood crates, reinstall washer shipping bolts, drain hoses, cap gas lines on dryers, and secure doors and control panels.
  3. Palletize upright with 4-way entry, corner protectors, and banding; mark orientation and protect glass lids or stacked units from side impact.
  4. Reference Note Item 124201 if shipping pedestals or stacked washer-dryer combos, and list NMFC 124200 as non-hazmat on paperwork.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Right-sizing packaging improves density and can push loads into a lower class, reducing LTL rates for single units or multi-appliance skids.
  • Accurate NMFC usage minimizes reclass/rebill risk, keeping margins predictable for appliance dealers, refurbishers, and property managers.
  • Crating and proper bracing lower damage and claim costs on drums, bearings, and control boards—common loss points for laundry machines.
  • Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and speeds tendering, helping meet delivery windows for installations and turnarounds.
