How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Determine density by weighing the packed unit and measuring the outer box or crate. Example: a 620 lb unit in a 42×48×40 in crate is ~13.3 pcf.
  2. Choose packaging by size and fragility: crates for boilers or generators, heavy-duty boxes for controls, and well-cushioned packages for valves and gauges.
  3. Drain water, cap steam ports, and protect manifolds and sight glass with bracing. Bag electronics against moisture and use shock/tilt indicators when practical.
  4. Present the density-derived class (70–400) on the BOL with exact weight. Note handling marks like “This Side Up” and “Keep Dry” for safer LTL transfer.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Density-based rating lets you lower costs by right-sizing crates and reducing void space to improve pcf and potentially achieve a lower class.
  • Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat surcharges and special paperwork, speeding up carrier acceptance and quote turnaround.
  • Clear use of NMFC 124225 minimizes reclasses, helping prevent unexpected invoices and shortening claim cycles if damage occurs.
  • Purpose-built crating for institutional steam gear reduces downtime for hospitals, campuses, and food plants by cutting transit damage risk.
