How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Identify what you’re shipping: full lint collector assemblies versus separate filter bags or screens. Crate full housings; box and pad loose mesh or bag elements.
- Cap duct openings, wrap housings to contain residue, and strap to a pallet with corner boards. Avoid overhang and list “NMFC 124235, lint collectors/filters” on the BOL.
- Note that sub-items can fall anywhere in Class 250–400 based on packaging. Describe packaging clearly (boxed, crated, palletized) to prevent inspections and reclass.
- For laundries or rebuild shops, remove motors, doors, or controls and ship separately to reduce damage. Provide exact dims and weight so carriers plan capacity correctly.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable rating within a known high class range reduces surprise reclass charges and helps you budget LTL rates accurately.
- Proper crating and immobilization protect fragile mesh and bag media, cutting damage claims and downtime for laundry and textile operations.
- Clear NMFC coding and non-hazardous status speed quotes and BOL prep, shortening dock time and minimizing carrier inspection delays.
- Smart packing—nesting filter media inside housings and using standard pallets—lowers cube, curbs accessorials, and improves freight cost per unit.
