How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm the packaging-specific rating: Class 100 or 110 may apply based on boxes vs. crates. Put the exact wording on the BOL (e.g., “Cylinders, washing machine, boxed”).
- Select packaging by condition: use strong corrugated with foam rings for new stainless drums; choose a wood crate with internal blocking for remanufactured or heavy steel tubs.
- Keep parts dry and clean before packing; cap sharp edges and perforations, then wrap with poly or VCI to prevent corrosion and detergent residue staining.
- Palletize with no overhang, center the weight, and add two or more straps plus stretch wrap. Use corner protectors and mark Do Not Stack if the cylinder walls could deform.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable LTL costs via fixed Class 100–110 ratings—no density calculations, faster quoting, and fewer rating disputes.
- Lower claim rates when crating or padding reduces denting and out-of-round damage on washer drums in transit.
- Avoid costly reclass fees by listing NMFC 124250 and the actual packaging (boxes or crates) on labels and documents.
- Non-hazardous status streamlines paperwork and dock handling, improving turnaround for OEMs, refurbishers, and appliance parts distributors.
