How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Write the full item name on the BOL: “Cookers or Kettles, starch, steam,” and note NMFC 124245, Class 100, plus the packaging type (1 crate or 1 box).
- Crate or heavy-duty box the unit; block and brace jackets, valves, and ports. Cap all steam nozzles and use foam or plywood guards over flanges and sight glasses.
- Drain and dry the kettle to prevent starch residue or condensate leaks. Bag small parts (thermometers, lids, fittings) and secure them inside the container.
- For larger kettles, secure the crate to a skid and mark lift points. Keep center of gravity low and confirm liftgate or forklift needs before pickup.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 100 (non-density) rating simplifies quotes and reduces reclass disputes, improving landed cost accuracy.
- Non-hazardous designation speeds carrier acceptance and avoids hazmat surcharges, shortening tender-to-pickup timelines.
- Boxed or crated packaging aligns with carrier expectations, lowering OS&D risk and limiting special-handling fees.
- A single NMFC entry for these machines streamlines procurement and routing guides across plants and copackers.
