Notes

Note 124451: NOTE-Applies on machines with motorized vacuum pump and designed to be suspended from a crane or hoist for lifting or positioning various articles.

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Package vacuum-operated lifters in rigid boxes or wood crates; immobilize arms, suction cups, and manifolds with blocking and foam to prevent shock loads on the pump assembly.
  2. Cap or plug vacuum ports, bag loose hardware, and detach quick-release extensions when possible. Include a parts list and manual inside the container for receiving teams.
  3. Mark the crate with center-of-gravity and “This Side Up” arrows. Add a skid or pallet base so forklifts can lift from both sides without stressing the frame.
  4. Put NMFC 124450 and “Vacuum Lifter/Handler — Boxed/Crated” on the BOL. Provide exact packaged weight and exterior dimensions to avoid inspection delays and accessorials.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Fixed Class 100 simplifies rate shopping across carriers and reduces reclass risk for material-handling equipment.
  • Boxed/crated requirement aligns with damage prevention, lowering claim exposure for pumps, frames, and suction assemblies.
  • Non-hazardous status widens carrier options and supports flexible LTL service levels without special handling fees.
  • Clear NMFC labeling and proper blocking speed dock processing, helping you avoid reweigh/inspect charges and unexpected costs.
