How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm the product is a manual drivetrain unit (transmission, gearbox, or transaxle) and ship it in a rigid box; drain gear oil, cap ports, and bag the unit to prevent seepage.
- Use heavy‑duty corrugated or wood boxes with internal blocking; protect input/output shafts, sensors, and splines using foam, caps, or molded inserts to prevent side-impact damage.
- Palletize the closed box to avoid conveyor jams: center on the pallet, eliminate overhang, add corner boards, then strap and wrap. Mark “This Side Up” and “Manual Transmission—Boxed.”
- Quote LTL with NMFC 124540 and select the correct boxed sub per NMFTA; two fixed classes fall in the 70–92.5 range. Provide weight and exterior box dimensions on the BOL for accurate rates.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable rating with two fixed classes reduces reclass risk and helps forecast landed costs for drivetrain shipments.
- Boxed packaging lowers claim frequency by shielding housings and shafts, cutting write‑offs and customer downtime.
- Non‑hazardous designation streamlines paperwork and speeds dock processing, improving overall transit reliability.
- Using the correct NMFC code improves carrier acceptance and can unlock better LTL tariffs across multi‑lane networks.
