How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Choose sturdy packaging: factory box for lightweight benchtop units or a fully braced export crate for floor models; block and brace solder pots and lock casters.
- Drain and cap flux lines, remove loose tooling and board carriers, and wrap nozzles and preheater elements with foam plus VCI or moisture barrier film.
- Mark lift points and center of gravity on the crate; specify accessorials like liftgate, limited access, or appointment if the electronics line is inside a facility.
- Book at Class 100 without a density entry; attach a packing list that lists machine type (wave solderer, fluxer, preheater), serial number, and crate dimensions for routing.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable rating at Class 100 removes density disputes and stabilizes LTL quotes for capital equipment.
- Clear packaging scope (boxes or crates) streamlines compliance and reduces claim risk on delicate heaters and solder pumps.
- Faster tenders and transit planning for EMS and OEM shops by using a single NMFC for the system and its major components.
- Lower total cost of risk via proper blocking/bracing and moisture control, protecting precision nozzles and electronics from transit shocks.
