How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Record weight and calculate density using the packaged size of the box or crate (PCF = weight ÷ cubic feet). Example: 600 lb in a 36×34×75 in crate ≈ 31.8 PCF.
  2. Use approved packaging: sturdy boxes, wood crates, or packages 994/995/2043/2134/2188. Block and brace internally and strap to a skid to keep the tall cabinet upright.
  3. Prep the machine: remove or secure coin/cash boxes, lock service doors, pad glass fronts, and add Tip-N-Tell/tilt indicators. For refrigerated/heated units, defrost and cap lines.
  4. Plan accessorials early—liftgate, appointment, inside pickup/delivery, or limited access—common at retail sites, breakrooms, schools, and vending depots.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Density-driven class lets you lower costs by improving packaging efficiency (tighter crating raises PCF and can yield better LTL rates).
  • Accurate NMFC/Item 170 details reduce reclass, inspection, and delay charges, protecting margins on multi-stop vending rollouts.
  • Standard package types (994/995/2043/2134/2188) speed claims handling and reduce damage risk on tall, top-heavy machines.
  • Non-hazardous commodity—no hazmat fees—so you can forecast cleaner landed costs across regional and national lanes.
