How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Secure the thread grinder to a robust skid: lag-bolt the base, add steel banding, lock the table and spindle, and crate loose tooling (wheels, dressers, guards) separately.
- Protect precision components. Pad and cover ways, lead screws, and control cabinets; add corner protectors and a rigid top frame before stretch-wrap or shrink-wrap.
- Mark center of gravity and lifting points, and maintain 4-way forklift access. Drain coolant where possible, cap lines, and use shock and tip indicators for high-value units.
- On the BOL, state the full NMFC: Machines, metal thread grinding, in packages or on skids, NMFC 124640, Class 92.5. Add required accessorials (liftgate, appointment) up front.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 92.5 eliminates density math, speeding LTL quotes and rate comparisons for machine tool shipments.
- Correct NMFC and packaging minimize reclass and inspection charges, cutting unexpected costs and delays.
- Skid or crated protection lowers risk to spindles and controls, reducing claim frequency and downtime after delivery.
- Clear handling marks and accessorial planning shorten terminal dwell time and improve pickup and delivery success rates.
