How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Quote and bill using NMFC 124920, Class 100. List actual weight and a clear packaging description (e.g., 48x40 pallet, 12 strapped bales). Density is not required.
- For baled alfalfa, strap bales in a crisscross pattern to a pallet, add top dunnage, and use breathable wrap or netting. Avoid full shrink-wrap to prevent sweating and mold.
- Ship dry forage only—target 10–15% moisture. Place a slip sheet or kraft paper under pallets to block floor moisture and keep away from liquids or odor-sensitive freight.
- Bagged or pelleted product: unitize 50 lb bags or 1-ton totes on pallets with corner boards and stretch film. Mark ‘Do Not Double Stack’ if stacks are unstable and block/bracer in trailers.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable Class 100 rating reduces reclass fees and speeds quoting, improving margin control on ag freight lanes.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and lowers compliance friction, helping secure capacity during peak harvest windows.
- Proper unitization and breathable protection cut OS&D, safeguard feed quality, and reduce claims-related downtime.
- Palletized, stabilized loads improve dock throughput and minimize handling touches, translating to fewer accessorials and faster turns.
