How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm the product fits: rotary blast-hole drilling bits with moving cutting heads, shipped in packages. List NMFC 125110 and select Class 60 or 65 per the item’s applicable subclass on your BOL.
- Immobilize the moving cutters: use molded caps, foam blocks, or wood collars around the cutting structure. Add thread protectors, VCI wrap or light oil, then box or crate and strap to a pallet with no overhang.
- Balance the load: these bits are dense with a high center of gravity. Use a sturdy pallet, corner boards, and 4-way entry; label orientation and keep stack height low to prevent tipping.
- Detail the paperwork: note piece count, gross weight, and ‘Non-Hazardous steel drilling tools.’ Include contact info for site delivery (mines, quarries, well sites) to avoid delays.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing: a fixed NMFC class (60–65) avoids density disputes and helps prevent costly reclass fees.
- Simpler compliance: non-hazardous status streamlines carrier selection and eliminates HAZMAT surcharges and extra documentation.
- Lower damage risk: packaging as secure boxes/crates with immobilized cutting heads reduces OS&D and keeps projects on schedule.
- Faster quoting and planning: standardized classification speeds LTL estimates and improves budgeting for mining, quarrying, and well-drilling operations.
