Classification Details

NMFC Description Class
125150.00 Drilling Machine Bit Shanks, Thread Bars, Extension Bars, Striking Bars, Drill Rods or Couplings, in packages, or loose if 10 feet or over in length 70

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Confirm length at quoting: pieces 10 ft or longer may ship loose; anything shorter should be bundled or crated to meet the rule.
  2. Protect threads and striking ends. Use plastic caps, wrap with VCI paper, and band to wood dunnage; e.g., bundle six 8‑ft rods with two steel bands and corner guards.
  3. Separate small couplings or adaptors into labeled boxes and record counts per bundle so nothing goes missing in LTL cross-docks.
  4. For long bars loaded loose (e.g., 12‑ft striking bars), place on timber runners with spacers every 4–6 ft, restrain with chains/straps, and avoid overhang beyond pallets.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Predictable Class 70 rating reduces reclass fees and speeds quotes for drilling suppliers, HDD crews, and quarry operations.
  • Loose shipping allowed at 10 ft+ cuts crating time and material costs while accelerating turnarounds to the jobsite.
  • Dimension-based rule means no density math; consistent rating across solid steel bars and shanks simplifies rate negotiations.
  • Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and streamlines paperwork, improving on-time performance in LTL networks.
