How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- State on the BOL: “Drilling machine columns, NMFC 125160, Class 85” to prevent reclass disputes and speed carrier acceptance.
- Package on a sturdy pallet or in a crate with blocking and banding; cap or wrap machined ends, use VCI for steel or cast iron, and add edge protectors under bands.
- Stabilize the center of gravity with chocks or cribbing; mark Do Not Tip and provide clear fork entry points for safe handling.
- If stack risk exists, add a top frame or corner posts to create a load-bearing surface; avoid relying solely on stretch wrap for restraint.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 85 eliminates density calculations, delivering predictable LTL quotes and faster tendering.
- Clear NMFC labeling reduces carrier inspections and costly reclass or reweigh fees.
- Standardized class lets you combine multiple columns on a single line item, improving rate breaks and minimizing accessorials.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and helps maintain dependable transit times.
