How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Secure the machine to a steel-reinforced skid or inside a crate; block, brace, and band the frame and hydraulic power unit to prevent shift during LTL handling.
- Cap hydraulic ports and drain external reservoirs if required by the carrier; include a drip pan and absorbents for residual oil to keep the freight non-haz and clean.
- Label pick points and center of gravity; request a forklift, dock height, or rigging support. Example: a 3,000 lb biomass briquetter may need a 6k lift capacity.
- Ship accessories separately when oversized (hoppers, conveyors, chip bins) and mark each piece with matching PRO/REF numbers to avoid misroutes.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 92.5 classification reduces reclass risk and stabilizes quotes for capital equipment moves.
- Clear NMFC mapping (125280) accelerates tendering and cuts admin time during rate shopping and carrier selection.
- Proper crating/skidding minimizes in-transit damage, lowering claim exposure and downtime at the receiving plant.
- Bundling machine and peripherals under one NMFC record streamlines paperwork and helps negotiate better LTL machinery rates.
