How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm configuration before booking: fully assembled cage vs. knocked-down panels. Packaging and condition drive the correct class within the 85-100 range.
- Build industrial skids or crates with 4-way forklift entry, steel banding, blocking and bracing. Mark center of gravity and align any lifting lugs outward for safe handling.
- Protect steel surfaces with VCI wrap or rust inhibitor, cap sharp edges, add corner guards, and cover doors or gate hardware in a bag secured inside the crate.
- State NMFC 125300 and a clear description on the BOL, include overall dimensions and weight for rating, and note equipment needs such as forklift or crane at pickup and delivery.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate NMFC usage reduces reclass bills and dispute time, keeping mine project timelines on track.
- Optimized packaging can qualify the shipment for a lower class in the 85-100 band, cutting LTL spend.
- Heavy-duty crating and corrosion control lower damage risk, avoiding costly rebuilds and downtime underground.
- Clear documentation speeds terminal handling and helps avoid accessorials tied to special handling or missed equipment needs.
