How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Measure outer crate or box dimensions and actual weight, then compute density (weight ÷ cubic feet) to select the correct class per Item 170. Example: 48x40x36 in at 600 lb ≈ 7.8 pcf.
- Detach bowls, hoppers, and agitators. Wrap food-contact parts with poly and desiccant, then block, brace, and pad to prevent movement inside the crate.
- For boxed units, use double- or tri-wall cartons on a pallet with banding and corner boards. Mark center of gravity and add Do Not Tip and Keep Dry labels.
- State NMFC 125752 on the BOL with packaging noted as box or crate, include calculated density, and mark Non-Hazardous to speed carrier acceptance.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Precise density declarations reduce reclass fees and surprise rate adjustments, improving quote accuracy and controlling LTL spend.
- Robust crating and sanitary wrapping cut damage and contamination risk, minimizing downtime and claim cycles for food processors and OEMs.
- Packaging choice optimizes costs: stackable crates can lower linear-foot charges, while strong boxes reduce tare weight and liftgate requirements.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and lanes, enabling faster transit planning and simpler documentation.
