Notes

Note 125762: NOTE-Plastic outboard marine motor housings or shrouds, or tanks, fuel, outboard marine engine, sheet steel, 26 gauge or thicker, capacity not exceeding 6 gallons, may be included in shipments of metal parts provided the weight thereof in shipments of less than 24,000 pounds does not exceed 10 percent of the weight of metal parts or that the weight thereof in shipments weighing 24,000 pounds or more does not exceed 25 percent of the weight upon which charges are assessed.

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Drain fuel and oil, disconnect the battery, and cap fuel and water lines; note “drained and dry” on paperwork to avoid hazmat confusion.
  2. Match packaging to size: double-wall box with foam for small/trolling units; skid-mounted crate with a motor stand for larger outboards. Use NMFC Pkgs 161/171/217/2480/2502 when applicable.
  3. Immobilize the lower unit and propshaft, brace the skeg, remove and wrap the prop, protect the cowling, and mark lift points. Keep center of gravity low and block/brace to prevent tip-over.
  4. Label as “NMFC 125760, Class 85, Non-Hazardous.” Include engine serial/HP, note residential or marina pickup/delivery, and request liftgate if no forklift is available.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Fixed Class 85 simplifies quoting and reduces reclass risk, protecting margins and preventing surprise carrier adjustments.
  • Approved boxes/crates/NMFC packages minimize damage in transit, lowering claims, downtime, and replacement costs for high-value marine power units.
  • Clear non-haz status (when drained) speeds carrier acceptance and terminal handling, shortening transit variability and improving on-time performance.
  • No density calculation needed—faster tendering, cleaner TMS mapping, and consistent rate benchmarking across lanes and carriers.
