How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Verify each unit weighs 10 lb or more as packaged; weigh after boxing to confirm eligibility for NMFC 125820 and Class 77.5.
- Box the motor or pump securely: drain fluids, cap all ports, protect shafts/gears, and use double‑wall corrugate with foam or engineered blocking (e.g., a 35 lb gear pump in foam‑in‑place inside a heavy-duty carton).
- List NMFC 125820, Class 77.5, and Non-Hazardous on the BOL. Exclude cylinders, reservoirs, or pulleys from the box to avoid reclassification.
- Palletize boxes upright, band or stretch-wrap to the pallet, and avoid mixed stacking of heavy cast-iron units on lighter models to reduce crush risk and claims.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 77.5 eliminates density calculations, streamlining quotes and reducing reclass disputes with LTL carriers.
- Boxed packaging requirement aligns with carrier handling standards, decreasing transit damage and claim costs.
- Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat fees and paperwork, lowering total landed cost and speeding tendering.
- Clear scope (no cylinders/reservoirs/pulleys) minimizes surprise accessorials and ensures predictable freight rates across lanes.
