Notes
Note 125851: NOTE-Exhaust systems consist of mufflers, resonators or silencers and exhaust or tail pipes, with or without head pipes, collectors, manifolds, catalytic converters or mounting hardware.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Measure and weigh each package to set density; example: a 48x40x24 in pallet is 26.7 cu ft. At 320 lb, density is ~12 pcf for correct classing.
- Protect inlet/outlet ends and hangers on mufflers and resonators with caps and edge guards, then overbox or crate to meet Item 170 handling standards.
- Bundle straight and bent exhaust tubing with spacers and end caps, then band to a pallet; avoid shrink-wrap-only as pipes can telescope or puncture.
- Pack catalytic converters and hydraulic accumulators separately from long pipe sections to deter theft and prevent abrasion; label as non-hazardous automotive parts.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate density entry reduces reclass and rebill risk, stabilizing LTL quotes for mixed exhaust assemblies and suppressors.
- Damage-resistant packaging (capped ends, inner blocks, rigid crates) lowers OS&D claims on fragile resonators and thin-wall tubing.
- Smart cube planning—nesting components and right-sizing cartons—can raise density and improve freight class, cutting billed weight and rates.
- Clear differentiation among related notes (125851 exhaust systems, 125852 industrial suppressors, 125853 processed auto pipe) prevents misclassification and delays.
