How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Pack albums and scrapbooks in sturdy corrugated boxes with edge protectors; bag each book or use tissue to prevent scuffs on covers and page edges.
- Palletize cartons on 48x40 GMA pallets, keep cartons within pallet footprint, column-stack, and stretch-wrap with two straps to limit crush and page shift.
- Mark the BOL as “NMFC 12600 — Albums/Scrapbooks, Class 70, Boxed” and include carton count; no density entry needed for rating.
- Control moisture and handling: add desiccant packs for humid routes, label “Do Not Top Load,” and keep single-carton weights manageable for parcel transfer points.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing with fixed Class 70 eliminates density disputes and reduces reclass fees.
- Non-hazardous classification broadens carrier options and speeds tendering during peak seasons.
- Boxed-only provision sets a clear packing standard, cutting damage claims on finished photo books and craft scrapbooks.
- Simple quoting empowers printers, photo labs, and craft retailers to forecast freight spend and negotiate better LTL rates.
