How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Calculate package density (PCF) for each carton and list it on the BOL; example: 36 lb in 2.8 cu ft = 12.9 PCF for density-based rating under Item 170.
- Use robust boxes with molded foam or suspension packaging to protect the motor head and logic board; bag fasteners and wall controls separately inside the master carton.
- If rails, belts, or photo-eyes ship in separate boxes, label each carton clearly and book them on the same NMFC item to avoid split classifications.
- Palletize cartons upright, strap twice in each direction, and wrap to the pallet; mark fragile control housings and avoid unnecessary ‘Do Not Top Load’ stickers that can trigger fees.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Density-based rating rewards compact, right-sized packaging, often lowering freight class and cutting LTL costs for opener kits.
- Boxed packaging aligned to Item 170 reduces reweigh/reclass disputes and shortens audit cycles with carriers.
- Clear NMFC identification streamlines quoting and contract pricing, enabling more predictable freight rates across SKUs.
- Damage reduction on motor assemblies and electronics decreases claims and downtime for installers and facility managers.
