How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Match packaging to the format: boxed for cut panels, closed-end fiberboard tubes for long rolls, or wrapped rolls with end protectors for quick turnarounds.
- Prevent creases and edge damage by rolling onto rigid cores (3 in. ID or larger for wide felts), adding edge guards, and using cradle skids instead of flat pallets.
- Control moisture and contamination—poly-line boxes, add desiccant for ocean or winter moves, and keep away from oils, graphite, and mill dust during consolidation.
- Mark handling clearly: “Do Not Fork Through,” “Keep Flat,” and arrowed roll direction. Strap across the core, not the fabric face, to avoid flat spots.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable costs with fixed Class 85—no density calculations or reweigh surprises when quoting LTL.
- Non-hazardous status streamlines paperwork and avoids hazmat surcharges, speeding tender and pickup.
- Packaging options (boxes, closed-end tubes, wrapped rolls) align with the NMFC item, reducing reclass risk and claims.
- Lower damage rates protect high-value paper machine uptime; fewer replacements mean less downtime and expedited fees.
