How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Record the outside length, width, and height of each sealed box; NMFC 126185 assigns class by dimensions rather than density.
- Choose rigid boxes or reinforced packages with edge guards and inner wrap to prevent kinks; label cartons “Do Not Bend.”
- Pack coils or flat sections per manufacturer specs and separate long accessories into a small package to keep the main box shorter.
- Provide exact box counts and dimensions (e.g., 62 x 10 x 10 in) on quotes to avoid reclass or oversize charges.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Dimension-accurate entries keep shipments in the proper 85–150 band, reducing reclass fees and invoice disputes.
- Right-sized boxes lower cubic footprint and accessorial risks, driving better LTL rates and carrier acceptance.
- Non-hazardous status expands carrier options and speeds tendering for tighter maintenance and production schedules.
- Protective packaging minimizes edge damage and kinks, cutting claims and safeguarding uptime in mills and fab shops.
