How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Pack wooden bars, wedges, and separators in sturdy G1-compliant cartons or crates with corner protection so edges don’t crush during clamp handling.
- Bundle uniform lengths with protective slipsheets, then add blocking to stop bars from shifting inside the package—especially for refiner plug/shell pieces.
- Keep wood dry: line packages with a moisture barrier if the mill or dock environment is humid, and label “Keep Dry” to avoid swelling or warping.
- Document clearly on the BOL: “Wooden beater roll/refiner wedges – NMFC 126310 – Class 50 – Non-hazardous” to prevent reclassification or inspection delays.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 50 simplifies rating—no density calculations, fewer surprises on LTL quotes for mill maintenance spares.
- Non-hazardous wooden components avoid hazmat fees and special permits, reducing total landed cost.
- G1 package standard aligns with carrier handling, lowering risk of damage claims for machined wooden profiles.
- Clear NMFC alignment speeds dock processing and billing, shortening dwell time for paper and pulp operations on tight outage schedules.
