How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Stabilize each roll in V-block cradles or saddles, then band to a solid skid with edge protectors and chocks to prevent any rotational movement in transit.
- Protect journals and working faces with caps, oil paper, or shrink wrap; note any lifting eyes and mark center of gravity for safe handling at pickup and delivery.
- Use a rated lift with wide forks or a spreader bar and slings; avoid point loading on journals and keep rigging clear of machined surfaces.
- Confirm the correct subclass within the 70–85 range based on construction and condition, then list NMFC 126340 and the selected class on the BOL.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable 70–85 freight class streamlines quoting and reduces reclass or rebill disputes.
- Proper crating and blocking cut damage risk on high-value rolls, lowering claim costs and downtime at the mill.
- Non-hazardous status simplifies carrier acceptance and avoids hazmat fees or paperwork delays.
- Right-sized cradles and skids improve cube utilization, helping control LTL rates and accessorial exposure.
