How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Pack each mold in a rigid box or crate with internal blocking and bracing. Pad the wire covering to prevent snagging or puncturing walls during transit.
- Write an explicit BOL description: “Cylinder Molds, wire covering, damaged or worn—salvage only, NMFC 126400, Class 77.5.” Add “Do Not Stack” if the crate cannot bear top load.
- Secure sharp wire edges with heavy wrap or edge guards, and use corrosion-resistant liners if parts are oily or damp from teardown.
- Measure and record exterior crate dimensions and weight for LTL quoting, even though the class is fixed. Photograph condition before pickup to support claims if needed.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing at Class 77.5 removes density disputes and reduces reclass fees on used machinery parts.
- Salvage-only designation aligns liability and service expectations, helping avoid rating as finished equipment.
- Boxed/crated requirement lowers damage risk to delicate wire coverings, protecting refurbishment timelines and budgets.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and speeds booking without hazmat surcharges or paperwork.
