How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use sturdy boxes or fully enclosed crates for knife and bar assemblies; pad sharp edges with caps and dense foam, and band crates to a skid to prevent shift.
- For stone segments or heavy shell liners, select hardwood skids with top-deck bracing; center the load and mark lift points for forklifts to avoid tip risk.
- Apply light oil or VCI wrap to steel bars/knives and add desiccant inside boxes to control mill moisture during transit and storage.
- Bundle matched sets (left/right bar groups or specific plug patterns) together, label piece counts on each container, and photograph packaging before tendering.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 85 simplifies LTL quoting and reduces reclass charges for pulp and paper mill components.
- Recognized packaging (boxes, crates, skids) speeds dock handling and shortens dwell time during cross-dock transfers.
- Non-hazardous status lowers compliance overhead and streamlines carrier acceptance, keeping lanes flexible.
- Accurate classification for complete fillings/liners minimizes claim exposure on sharp, abrasion-prone parts.
