Notes

Note 126932: NOTE-Shipments of shafts or shafting without cams, couplings or fittings, when greased or freshly painted, must be in boxes, crates or drums, or completely wrapped in burlap, or wrapped at center and near ends (ends may be exposed) with burlap 8 inches wide or over. Bundles must be wired and burlap secured in 3 or more places by annealed wire, 12 gauge or thicker. Two metal tags or tags in metal holders, or tags with eyelets reinforced by metal, plainly, legibly and durably addressed, must be wired to each bundle or loose piece, one attached outside the bundle or piece, the other placed within the burlap and secured by the wire. When tags other than metal are used on bundles or loose pieces, shellac, silicate of soda or other transparent greaseproof coating should be applied over the marks thereon.

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Bundle long steel shafts with banding over wood separators, cap threaded or machined ends, and chock to prevent rolling on skids or pallets.
  2. Apply corrosion protection: light oil plus VCI wrap, then stretch wrap; precision-ground shafts benefit from full wooden crating and foam blocking.
  3. Distribute weight evenly on runners with adequate fork clearance; mark center of gravity for pieces over 8 ft and specify lift points on the BOL.
  4. Document finish and packaging (rough, turned, ground; bundled, palletized, crated) so the correct NMFC class within 65–85 is honored by carriers.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Right-sized packaging that matches the NMFC subclass helps avoid reclass fees and surprise inspections.
  • Bundling bars on skids reduces special handling and speeds cross-dock moves, improving transit times and rate eligibility.
  • Enhanced protection minimizes nicks and corrosion on functional surfaces, cutting claims and costly rework or customer returns.
  • Clear descriptions and photos in quotes accelerate approvals across carriers and 3PLs, stabilizing LTL costs and planning.
