How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Drain and dry the pump assembly, cap all ports, and bag the unit to prevent fumes; carriers may refuse boxes with fuel odor.
- Measure the outside carton dimensions and weight, then calculate density (lb/ft³). Example: 24 lb in 2.0 ft³ = 12 pcf for classing under Item 170.
- Use Package 1241 or 1273 style boxes with rigid inserts or foam-in-place. Isolate the sender float arm and connectors to stop punctures.
- For multiple units, strap cartons to a pallet, keep orientation labels visible, and add corner protection to avoid conveyor damage.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Correct density and packaging help avoid reclass, reweigh, and inspection fees that inflate LTL costs.
- Non-hazardous status widens carrier options and typically yields better rates and transit flexibility.
- Damage reduction through proper bracing cuts RMAs and keeps dealership and repair shop workflows on schedule.
- Accurate specs enable instant quoting and predictable freight budgets for recurring parts replenishment.
