How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Choose sturdy packaging: heavy wood crates or double-wall boxes that match the sheet footprint; add edge guards and paper or film interleaves to prevent scuffing.
- Band bundles tight and block to a skid inside the crate so sheets cannot slide; keep weight low and centered for safe forklift handling.
- List NMFC 127950, Class 150, and “Sheet Metal—Iron or Steel” on the BOL; specify the exact packaging type (box or crate) for a clean rating.
- Plan handling: request liftgate or forklift where needed, and use corner protection and gloves to manage sharp edges during pickup and delivery.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 150 simplifies quoting—no density calculation—reducing reclass and rebill risk.
- Proper crating cuts edge and surface damage, lowering claims while keeping fabrication schedules on track.
- Non-hazardous status widens carrier options and improves LTL price competitiveness.
- Standard crate footprints (e.g., 48×96) boost trailer utilization and help avoid cubic and oversize surcharges.
