How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- State “iron/steel sheet and cast combined” on the BOL and reference Class 85 and NMFC 127960 to prevent reclass or inspections.
- Bundle sheet metal with steel strapping and edge guards; crate or block castings. Separate the two with plywood or foam when placed on the same pallet.
- Protect from rust and abrasion: use VCI wrap, corner protectors, slip sheets, and shrink film. Cover sharp sheet edges to reduce punctures and claims.
- Balance weight and center of gravity—cast pieces low, sheets flat with no overhang. Request fork extensions for wide bundles and mark ‘Do Not Stack’ if surface finish matters.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing from a fixed Class 85—no density math, faster quoting and bidding.
- Lower reclass risk by using a single, clear NMFC for mixed sheet-and-cast metal loads.
- Easier planning for auto and machinery rebuilders moving mixed metal components on one pallet.
- Reduced damage and claim costs when sheets and castings are packaged as specified for LTL.
