How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Describe the unit clearly on the BOL: “Pumps, power, NOI, NMFC 128000,” include piece count, net weight, and full dimensions for each handling unit.
- Prep the pump: drain fluids, cap all ports, secure rotating shafts, and protect flanges with guards to prevent leaks and impact damage.
- Mount securely: bolt the base to a 48x40 pallet or skid, add blocking to keep the center of gravity low, then band twice in each direction and stretch-wrap. Crate heavy or tall units.
- Match handling to site limits: request liftgate or appointment if no dock; note “non-hazardous, drained” to avoid unnecessary hazmat fees or delays.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Cleaner rating with the proper NOI item reduces reclass disputes and surprise invoices.
- Damage prevention through bolting, blocking, and capping lowers claim costs and customer downtime.
- Non-hazardous when drained and capped, eliminating hazmat paperwork and surcharge exposure.
- Palletized or crated pumps move faster across docks, improving transit reliability and labor efficiency.
