How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Prevent tooth damage: cap rack ends, add edge guards along the teeth, and wrap with VCI paper or oil-resistant film before boxing or crating.
- Stabilize long lengths: band racks to a skid with wood chocks and 3+ contact points; flag any length over 96 inches to avoid oversize surprises.
- Control oil and debris: line crates with absorbent pads and poly sheeting if racks are preservative-coated to prevent leakage and cleanup fees.
- Label technical details: mark module/pitch, piece count, and bundle ID so receivers and inspectors verify contents without opening protective packaging.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Reduced claims: tooth protection and rigid crating cut handling damage on precision racks, preserving tolerances and customer satisfaction.
- Lower accessorials: accurate length disclosure and secure bundling help avoid excessive length or additional handling charges common with long steel parts.
- Faster inspections: clear NOI identification and packaging notes minimize carrier reclass delays when no fixed NMFC class is published.
- Broader carrier options: non-hazardous parts ship via standard LTL networks, improving rate shopping and transit flexibility.
