Note 128122: NOTE-Applies only on tractor radiator grilles and front end housing combined as from the mold except that the base may be ground and holes may be drilled, and when weighing each 150 pounds or over.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Verify applicability with Note, item 128122, confirming the assembly is a cast-iron tractor radiator grille with front end housing; list exact part numbers on the BOL.
- Use the fixed Class 50: cite NMFC item 128120 and Class 50 on paperwork; still include weight and dimensions for rating and capacity planning.
- Palletize by bolting the housing through existing mounting holes to a skid; block and brace, add a rigid face board to protect the grille, and strap with edge protectors.
- Prevent brittle cast iron damage: avoid point loads, label center of gravity, add VCI wrap and caps on machined openings, and specify no top stacking if grille faces outward.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable costs with fixed Class 50 on heavy cast-iron assemblies, often yielding lower LTL rates per cwt.
- Fewer reclass disputes by using the single NMFC item covering the combined grille and housing assembly.
- Reduced claims through bolt-down crating and face protection, minimizing downtime for ag equipment dealers and rebuilders.
- Non-hazardous status and clear documentation (per Note 128122) speed tendering and limit inspection delays or fees.
