How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Label the BOL as “Radiators or Radiator Cores, engine cooling” and note if it’s a complete radiator (tanks, core) or a bare core.
- Protect the fin face and tanks: use a rigid corrugated shield over fins, cap all inlets/outlets, and foam-line cartons for passenger units; crate heavy diesel cores.
- Palletize upright with no overhang, add corner posts, cross-band with two straps minimum, and use ‘Do Not Stack’ cones to prevent crush damage.
- Drain and dry used parts, wipe residual coolant, photograph packaging, and include exact dims/weight to avoid reclass/reweigh since class isn’t specified.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Damage reduction on delicate fins and tanks cuts claim risk and replacement costs.
- Clear item naming and photos curb carrier disputes and prevent reclassification fees.
- Right-sized cartons or custom crates enable tighter loading and better LTL rates.
- Faster dock handling from palletized, labeled freight shortens dwell time and delays.
