How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Palletize the ram on a heavy-duty skid, block both ends to prevent rolling, and steel-band in two directions with corner protectors for safe lift-truck handling.
- Protect machined faces with caps and VCI wrap, apply a light oil film to reduce corrosion, and fully crate if exporting or if multiple transfers are expected.
- Declare true weight and center of gravity; specify forklift or crane requirements on the BOL and request a liftgate only if site loading equipment is unavailable.
- Mark the freight: “Rams, power drop hammer – NMFC 128180, Class 85, Non-Haz.” Attach a packing list and indicate piece count and pallet dimensions.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 85 removes density calculations, speeding quotes and reducing reclass disputes that can add unexpected fees.
- Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat surcharges and specialized documentation, streamlining compliance and training requirements.
- Standard skid or crate packaging fits LTL networks, enabling better consolidation and more competitive rates compared to bespoke handling.
- Reduced damage risk on dense, compact parts limits claims and keeps forging or maintenance schedules on track, lowering downtime costs.
